The Tensioning Arm is the part that holds the tensioning sprocket or roller in place. It is designed to automatically adjust to the chain's slackness thanks to the rubber spring principle. Tensioner sprockets and rollers are designed to fit to the arm and provide a smooth rotating area for the chain or belt to glide on.
Tensioner arms must be fitted to a flat non-moving part of the machine. If the surrounding area is dirty or uneven, this can be compensated for via an adjustment pin. Tensioner arms come with two settings, normal or 'hard'. Setting them to Hard will increase the applied force by 25%.
Please note that Tensioner arms must be fitted outside the chain loop and as parallel to the chain as possible.
Tensioner sprockets must have at least three teeth engaged in the chain after tensioning to avoid chain slippage.
If your chain drive is reversible, it is recommended to use two tensioners at either side of the chain system. It is also recommended to use two tensioners if your chain drive is very long.
Roller chains are very powerful mechanical devices. Their design however, can lead to the chain becoming slack due to wear. The chain can end up becoming 3% longer. The chain will no longer run smoothly on the sprockets, which createas an uneven power cycle. The life of the chain can be extended however, by using a tension adjuster. This is a device which takes up the slack of an old chain and keeps a steady tension on the sprockets.
